I'm young and don't have children yet. Do you have some links or stories about what I can do in Vegas at night?

Yes, it evens out if you sell and buy in Tampa but if you compare to areas that have not had the same increases in the top two housing expenses, besides your mortgage and utilities then it is not even.

The additional costs puts an additional burden on you folks in FL and that's my main reason for not moving there. I expect housing in FL will lag the country unless or for as long as those increases are not rectified somehow.

I realize Vegas winters are BBQ weather for back east locales. Realize I said I'm from L.A. Anything below 60 degrees is freezing to me.

How about Denver? Great weather, mountains for hiking and skiing, cost of living is good. We have poker in Blackhawk which is 45 minutes from Denver. Good NL tournaments.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh gawd no, not Denver. I'm stuck in this poker wasteland of no fold 'em hold 'em, and am hoping to escape myself ... soon. Worst part about the tournaments here, is that the no fold 'em Hold 'em bingo poker mentality invades the Tournaments here as well.

Nothing like driving a danged hour in both directions, and get you aces cracked after raising it up 6 times the BB preflop, and having some donkey call you with Q/3 suited, simply because it's suited (and because they are used to here in Denver, playing any to cards to the flop, and sometimes all the way to the river).

I've done the single parent thing myself, and it's not easy. I moved from the Chicago area (Brookfield to be exact) to Cincinnati, when my son was 14, because the Chicago area wasn't a good place to raise kids, and especially not all alone.

I would suggest that the OP either move to San Diego, or he might also consider Memphis, TN. At least in Memphis, TN, he'd have Tunica (MS), just a short hop, skip and a jump away from him to play at the many casinos there that have poker. Plus, you don't have the traffic problems that San Deigo has, and it's cheaper to live and still a good place to raise kids.

Edit: to the OP, One last thing to consider as well, as one (former, as my son is now grown) single parent to another, be sure you have a good support system in place (IE: Friends to care for your child, if say you have to go out of town on Business, or you get sick and are hospitialized or something of the like), where ever you decide to move to. It's imparitive that you do, because if you don't, it'll cause you mass headaches and problems later on down the road.

Ahhh, Horseshoe Council Bluffs, $2-5 is a goldmine!

You can balance family and poker considerations a lot of places. Count me in the school of thought that says parental environment is 100 times more important than the presence or absence of temptation. Then again, I'm not a dad.

[/ QUOTE ]

I was born and raised in Omaha (and I still have family there too), and if the OP was to pick that city (and it is a good place to raise kids), the only casino that has poker is indeed the Horseshoe across the bridge in CB Iowa.

Stay away from Omaha Public schools though, they are the worst, I could tell you horror stories about them both from my own personal experiences and from my son's point of view a few decades later.

I'd recommend for Omaha, either the Ralston or Millard Public Schools, or pay extra and put your kid in a private school. Stay away from OPS at all costs. For CB Iowa, I can't really say, but the taxes there are less than in Omaha I've heard.

Most people find these the most profitable games to play. From what I have observed the tournament players in Black Hawk are much tighter than in other markets for similar sized tournaments.

If anyone is thinking of moving to vegas, now is the time. Asking prices are low and the actual selling price is usually around 10-15% less than the asking. Alot of homes are going into or already are in foreclosure. My sister just bought a foreclosed home in vegas for 350,000 that sold 2 years ago for 525,000. The only place worse for real estate right now is the Phoenix area but there was an unreal run up in values there that had to correct itself sooner rather than later. Buy in vegas now and I am sure you will make money a little further down the road.
As for raising a family in Vegas, it's really not a bad place to do so. if you are concerned about the public schools check the many private ones around. Many of them are really not that expensive at all. Bishop Gorman for example.
My family is from the midwest and we moved to Vegas in the mid 90's. I came back to the midwest for a job but i have to say i would move back to Vegas in a second if i had the chance. Just like any large city there are good and bad parts to Vegas but you learn quickly where to stay away from and there are plenty of nice places to live out there.
To the OP, i would go with Vegas over your other choices. I can honestly say your kid will thank you for the great time he had growing up as he leaves the state to go to college because colleges in Nevada is where the problems are. But at least you will be alone in Vegas and then the real fun starts

That's not what I have experienced. I've lived here for a year and a half now, and as for the live action, I get more play out of the slot machines than from playing with that bunch (puke), to be sure.

As for the tourneys, I've yet to cash even once because of the piss poor way they play up there (I wasn't kidding either about the guy who called my 6 times the BB preflop raise with Q/3 just because it was suited). It's such a long drive to get there as well, which only adds to my frustration. Add to all of that the rooms up there refusal to run a high stakes tournament even if it was only once a month or even once a quarter, say like 500 bucks, with no rebuy no reentry, it only makes it even worse. I'm even doubious now about the upcoming HPT event, because the Satallites will be so cheap to get into, I'm concerned that the 'bingo' player crowd will prevail and get into the HPT ME.

I for one can't wait to get the heck out of here, and move someplace where I can play REAL poker. Heck, I was even better off in Cincinnati when I lived there, and there wasn't any legal poker for at least 70 miles (the Belterra). At least there, I knew where all the backrooms were.

The 300 on Sunday is pretty close. It is structured in a way that most players buy the entire 300 up front (there is usually no more than 1 or 2 out of the field of 60 or 70 that don't).
