question for you metal fans (slight hijack sorry):

do you think hardcore should be considered "real metal" or not?

[/ QUOTE ]

Easier to answer if you give some examples of bands you lump in with hardcore.

I am not as prone to care as most metal dudes about stuff like this but I think there is a line between the two genres. Mostly around lyrical content and vocal style for me.

My favorite music is that which combines the riffage of metal with the innovative drumming and rhythms of hardcore. Too much metal features crappy drumming.

yeah, w/o examples this is tough to define...i tend to lump hardcore as either punk hardcore or metal hardcore...

hatebreed = metal hc

ok, I'll use my examples from earlier in the thread and a few others...

As I Lay Dying
Earth Crisis
One King Down
Shadows Fall
Atreyu
It Dies Today
36 Crazy Fists
Remembering Never
Norma Jean

Then, I guess I'd add any of these bands you'd consider "metal" to the recommended list, with the exception of Atreyu, who are probably more pop/punk/hardcore anyway

Maybe I'm just not a metal purist. But in my iTunes, each of those bands above are categorized as "Metal". Then again, I also have Death categorized as "Metal" also. I just don't like lots of different genres in my MP3s, I guess.

I'm not a purist either, which is why I asked the question. I'd consider all of them metal, but I know a lot of purists don't think of hardcore as pure metal because of how close a lot of it is to punk.

Took way too long for someone to mention Neurosis. Their first 4 or 5 albums are one big masterpiece.

Diecast is pretty good depending on the album.
Unearth is good.

I like metalcore though some people do not.
