Help me discover some new music

I know there's a few music posts floating around right now, and I tried to use www.pandora.com, but it only works if you already have something to go on.

I've listened to pretty much exclusively hip hop and soul/motown/r&b since I started listening to music, and I'd like to try something new. The non hip hop type of artists I enjoy are Bill Withers, The Whispers, Ray Charles, Bobby Womack, Sam Cooke, and some others. My favorite hip hop tends to be late 90s or Bay Area, but I'll listen to it all, even straight turn tablism.

I don't really want any more hip hop recs, but for someone who literally has no idea what's going on w/ any music outside of hip hop and r&b, could you guys suggest some music that might help me transition to an appreciation for rock, jazz, etc? I'd prefer no head banger stuff, but if you really like it, I think I'll give anything a try.
