Default What limit to start at? (long post)

My poker background: I played every college game I could find and a few home games in the area that ranged from 40NL to 300NL. While I dabbled online and played live compulsively, I was not serious about systematically improving my game. Due to rich kids and Northern Virginians who can't play poker and generally soft games, I was happy, but I never kept a proper bank roll b/c A. I didn't really know what one would be B. I was a poor college student and winnings over 3 buy-ins would go towards booze and women C. the games were relatively [censored] and i figured if I had to i could always move down in live limits for a while.

This summer post-graduation was the first time I set aside money for just poker. I played exclusively live at the local casino, a club, and a few home games and did well enough at the 1-1-2 game and shots at the 2-3-5 game that I supported myself for a little while off of my winnings. I've taken the last month off from poker and am working now, but the majority of my roll is still sandwiched in between a couple of books on my shelf, hidden in the monopoly box with the play money, and most importantly, burning a frigging hole in the back of my head. I want to make the move to serious internet play, and am wondering what the hell limit I belong at. I'm most likely only a slightly above average player, but I did beat the pants off those live games. My understanding of multitabling, PT, PAHUD, sixth sense, and all this other junk is so limited I'd feel like I was doing myself a disservice just jumping in at the limit or even the limit below the one I'm currently rolled for. Should I start at 25NL and work my way up from scratch? From the stuff I've read on here, I'm grossly underqualified to jump in at 600NL. Where the hell do I belong?

You should start at NL25. You're not nearly as good as you think you are.

Just being frank, not trying to be a jerk.

Well, not being "Frank" in a literal sense...

25NL, I'd say. Just start at the lowest rungs, make sure you can beat it. If you have enough money to get yourself rolled for higher limits - move up as soon as you feel confident you're beating your current level.

no. I appreciate it the honesty. Believe me, I am aware of many of my shortcomings as a player.

Heh ... you give this advice to all that ask this question, and I bet noone ever listens to you (I know that I didn't, but should have )

But beyond what Grunch says, I'd say play whatever you can affort. Read up on samplesizes winrates and such and take a look at your roll. Then decide how much you want to/can afford to gamboool and hit the tables.

Do what makes you happy .... Whatever .. Holla !!

it never hurts to start at the bottom, where you might be overqualified and move up

it hurts to start too high and blow your roll

I'm with grunch

the height of my roll was 20K, but I was also pulling money out for expenses, so who knows. I have about 15K right now.

Nope, they almost never do. But they always say eventually, "I should have listened to Grunch all those long years ago..."
