Default Movie: The Shooter

I woke up to this ad on the radio. The name of the character caught my ear. It's based on a great book by Stephen Hunter: Point of Impact. Except they've altered it a bit, as usual.

The book kicked ass, I can't wait to see how this movie stacks up.

There's a trailer on this site(under videos). Other trailers, the links didn't seem to work.

Bernie,

This director did Training Day, which I loved. Some of his other stuff has been pretty weak (King Arthur, Tears of the Sun, Bait).

Mark Wahlberg has similarly mixed performances. I thought he was very good in Boogie Nights, Three Kings, and The Perfect Storm. I thought he was horrible in Rock Star, Planet of the Apes, and Four Brothers. Much of his other work is somewhere in the middle.

With other good actors like Danny Glover and Elias Koteas, plus the super hot Rhona Mitra, I think there's a lot of potential here, but I'm not setting my expectations very high.

Mark Wahlberg as action hero is bad times.

Do not feel very positive about this movie.

Dids,

Marky Mark is a bad ass please do not kid yourself. This movie looks like it has some potential, plus I really dig the chick from We Are Marshall.

El D,

You mention Training Day, I saw the movie Harsh Times two days ago which was written by the same guy that wrote Training Day. It has Christian Bale in it (a bad ass as usual) and it was better than I expected though not nearly on the level of Training Day. It was gritty and turned out to be pretty entertaining. Sorry for the hi-jack.

I highly recommend Hunter's books for action fans. Good stories and very well written. You gotta love a character named Bob Lee Swagger who earned the nickname "Bob the Nailer" as a sniper in Vietnam.

In addition to writing novels, Hunter is a film critic for the Washington Post. I'd love to see him do a review on this one.

At first, I was apprehensive about him in this flick. The way they describe the guy in the book, I didn't think Wahlberg fit. Mainly looks-wise. Kind of how Hanks really didn't fit the mold of the character in Davinci Code. Made it odd to watch. But upon seeing the clip, he fits the part pretty well.(mainly when he's wearing the flannel). There's a guy I play cards with that I think of when I read about this character.

Seems they may have hi-teched it up a bit though. The character is actually more old-school that what will be portrayed. I'm hoping they don't cliche it up with typical hollywood crap.

El D,

Training day did rock. But they had some good actors in there too which may have helped. Not to mention a great story.(the behind the scenes stuff was kinda cool to watch on the DVD extras)

Wahlberg? I think he's getting better. I agree some stuff is kind of mixed. I didn't mind him in Rockstar. Probably because I've seen guys that actually do act like that when I was briefly on the music scene. Departed, I was kind of mixed. I don't think his part was written that well. I thought DiCaprio was really good in that. He seems to be getting better too. Actually, now thinking of it, I think DiCaprio is a bit underrated.

Training Day was great script + great actors + average director.

fuqua has sucked the majority of the time.

and from what I've heard the movie is nothing special, has several major plot holes and a couple of laughable scenes that weren't meant to play that way, but all in all it is a average to decent action flick.

I'll have to check out that book

anyone here ever read Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels?
love those.

oh and side note..a movie to look forward to is

The Lookout...Scott Frank's first directing job.
