Default Explain Cheerleading to a Non-American

It seems a big deal in America and I don't get it. Organised cheerleading seems like the most pointless stupid thing ever, especially when it's devoted to equally stupid pointless high school/college sports. I kinda understand why it might make more people of a type come to games.

Do parents actually approve of something the explcitly sexualises their daughters?

Its not a big deal. I think it was more of a social status thing a while ago. These days (from what Ive seen) the average cheerleaders arent even hot.

Yes.

Cheerleading gives people something to watch during timeouts.

Girls are sometimes hot.

Helps make high school level popularity distinctions easier.

Its just to give girls something to do since they can't play real sports.

Hot chicks bouncing around in skimpy outfits.

What's not to understand?

Not so much that as having practice sessions, cheerleading coaches, cheerleading captains, girls who always wanted to be dressed in a skimpy outfit waving pom-poms...

like wtf?
