Basically, not only do you have to argue that Santana over the next 5 years is > Melky Wang and Kennedy, you have to argue that Santana > Melky Wang Kennedy + 150 Million dollars.

[/ QUOTE ]

with a new stadium opening up soon, the money is largely irrelevant.

lots of people think Kennedy will max out as a #3 type. Melky is fine but not hard to replace.

if you're the Yankees you should try to get the best available player at all positions, not nec. the best value.

i don't necessarily disagree with EVERYTHING you said, but I do disagree with at least some of it. so for the sake of discussion, let's do this exercise.

$150 million is nothing to sneeze at. especially since it's like 1/6 of the cost of the stadium. between hypothetical santana's and arod's contracts, the yankees could have built two stadiums.

[ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]
like who? there are also plenty of people who say he'll max out at Mussina's or Maddux's level, which was much better than a #3. plus, #3 on what team? he's better than a #3 for the pirates or rockies. do you mean #3 for the yankees/red sox?

[ QUOTE ]

quick, name 5 available players who are as good or better players than melky. then compare their ages and salaries.

uhhh... going back to point #1 about money being irrelevant, do you really think they can get 9 players + 6 pitchers, pay each anywhere from $15 to $25 million every year, build a new stadium without the city's subsidies, and not go broke?

from Rob Neyers column

I can't speak to the accuracy of these Yankees-related rumors, but they're certainly intriguing ...

A source of mine with Yankee connections had some good info for me today. Much was discussed yesterday in Tampa.

For starters, the Yanks are expected to make "eye-popping" offers to retain Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera before the World Series ends. The team does not want the pair to file for free agency.

Additionally, the Yankees may make a big play for Aaron Rowand. They believe a package of Melky Cabrera, Chien-Ming Wang, and Ian Kennedy would entice the Twins for Johan Santana. That's a huge price, but doesn't seem out of line to me for the best pitcher in baseball.

My source didn't have anything about Andy Pettitte, who hated seeing Joe Torre go and will take a month to decide if he's even going to play next year.

[/ QUOTE ]

Did Neyer really write that? The exact same thing, word-for-word, was posted on mlbtraderumors.com three days ago.

And please do not make that trade. Seems like the playoffs made a lot of Yankee fans forget how good Wang has been for the last couple of years.

BTW, another reason that trade would be bad for the Yankees: It would almost certainly lead to them giving Rowand a horrendous contract.

Glad they are out I would rather watch gay porn than watch the Yankees win a game.

re Kennedy, Kevin Goldstein said:

"Kennedy is pretty much the poster child for the kind of player who can put up ridiculous numbers in the minor leagues, but when it comes to the majors, he’s not as good. This is not a rip job on Kennedy by any means whatsoever. He’s a very good prospect, profiling as a solid number three or four starter in the big leagues for a long time ....Yankees fans shouldn’t be expecting greatness from him, either now or in the future."

I should have phrased that differently. the point is that value is less important to the Yankees than other teams.

the outlined trade would be incorrect for almost any other team to make, but maybe correct for the Yankees.

well given this is mainly off of ESPN/CBS/and other web sites but I've never seen Kennedy mentioned as a having great stuff or B being anything more than a solid middle of the rotation pitcher.

I don't disagree with the views of Thay3r etc but I do think most Yankee fans view their prospects with a best case scenario type of view.

I.E. Joba/Hughes can be awesome...thus they will be

So Andy/Wang/Joba/Hughes/Kennedy is going to eb an awesome pitching lineup for the next 5 years.

cept I don't see us making the playoffs next year if that is our starting 5.

Next year who do you want pitching a GAME 7 in the playoffs and feel like yes that guy is gonna be lights out.
Hughes...no
Joba...no
Kennedy...no
Wang...not really
Andy....yes

Who was that guy from '96-'00? Other than Cone for the last couple of months of '96, the Yankees never had a super dominant, lights out starter on their World Series winning teams.

there's a reason why he was picked in the first round. if solid mid-rotation was all you could ask for at his PEAK, he would not be drafted #21.

he has four legit very good to very-very good pitches, even if his fastball is 89-92 his control upgrades it quite a bit. plus, it appears that he can get it upto 94-95, but his control is much better if he doesn't. he has also reportedly developed a two-seamer last year.

if he is a solid #3 for the yankees for 10 years and possibly #1 or #2 for 1-2 years, that's awesome. i don't know why you'd package him with your other best pitcher and a great CF and ship him for a huge contract.
