Kinda OT: How to teach a total novice poker

He doesn't need to know ICM calculations by heart to play micro stakes SNGs.

The thing about getting started is not learning how to be a winning player the quickest way possible. It's about getting hooked on the game enough in order to eventually put in the hours you need to get better.

MTTs and SNGs have something that probably 90% of the people love - a winner. It has some sort of define result. It's a set competition, with a limited time frame.

I might not be the greatest example, since I suck in general, but I think its really hard for most to start with cash games. It takes a lot more self control (knowing when to stop, when to keep playing) and can make people hate the game way too soon.

He doesn't need to memorize calling ranges on the bubble. Just teach him basic preflop poker, and let him have fun with the game a bit. Once he'll have some idea of what this game is about, you can move him to micro stakes MTTs and try teach him some basic post flop concepts.

Eventually, get him to cash, when he has a better idea of what to do.

i LOLed.

also, the best book is millers "getting started in holdem". it has both limit/NL/sng sections (although any one section isnt all that great by itself) and it is designed for a complete beginner that doesnt even know the hand rankings or how the betting action works.

i loled and then loled even more when it went flying over aejones' head.

i don't know if this has been mentioned before but i think a key thing to understand is variance. you have to teach him to not be results oriented. however, don't hammer it in to the point where he chalks up bad play to variance. there is a happy medium that is important to understand in order to able to improve.

understanding variance will hopefully prevent him from second guessing good plays and help curb any frustration if he is close to jumping off a variance induced cliff.

When i taught my rooommate who nothing about poker how to play. The first thing i did after teaching him the basics like hand ranking is to make him read phil gordons little green book (twice). It does an excellent job of teaching simple tight aggressive poker in an easy to understand way. After that all that needed to be done is expand upon that knowledge with low stakes sng play and then mtts, then cash games. Also once he has learned those basics and played a bit himself let him start watching you play and explain everything your doing and why your doing it even if its a fold and then explain what is going on in the hand between the others. That should get you started

I like the idea of having him donk around in play money games or micro MTTs for a little bit so he can just get a feel for how the game flows.

Once he gets a feel and starts coming up with some ideas on how to play, work with him to logically think out certain plays, starting with the most basic hands - like push/fold situations in MTTs with a low M (teach him M and Structured Hand Analysis as well).
