Everybody's tastes are different, so you just have to go out and taste a lot of beers and see what you like. For Christmas, I got a gift certificate to a place that sells a huge variety of beers and sells them by the bottle. Maybe there's a place in your area that does the same thing.

Also, check http://beeradvocate.com/ . Click on the beerfly link under "Travel & Events" and look to see what's in your area.

This pretty much wins IMO.

I also had a vanilla porter from Brreckenricge Brewery last week that was fantastic.

Dos Equis Lager and Newcastle are good beers... I've been down the path you are on... one hint... when you get here...

Stop. You've made it to beer heaven.

Except that he listed what he likes thus far. IPA is not near it. It would be easier for him from a taste standpoint to start out with more similar beers and expand.

Shiner Bock is good stuff. I see it sporadically in odd places since I've first had it in Dallas.

I read somewhere that Stella used to be a cheap beer and then they started marketing it as a higher grade beer and it started to sell better. Any truth to that?

All I know about stella is that it currently outsells budweiser in the NYC market and is considered the Budweiser of where its from.

Wow, the DFH and Stone are absolutely terrible recommendations for this guy. He's probably not really going to enjoy dunking his head in a barrel of hops just yet.

Stella is typical Eurolager crap and people that order it at bars are probably the same people that insist on Grey Goose.

Thanks RDH. This is a case of some people that want to drop their beer cred without actually reading the OP.

2 of my favorites that I recommend to Newcastle drinkers are Old Speckled Hen and John Courage.
