found a stolen purse tonight. what to do w/ it?

i posted this really intending to call the police. i was surprised so many people said/voted call the family. as much as i would have liked to give the property back to the family, it seems i could open up a can of worms i wouldnt be ready to deal w/.

i called the police this morning on the nonemergency number and they were actually pretty fast to come over. my wife was the one who was home and gave it to the cop so she relayed the conversation. the cop said a purse had been stolen a few blocks over the night before and he was hoping it was the same purse and was disappointed it wasnt. i asked my wife if he realized this woman was dead and probably didnt have her purse stolen the night before.

my wife asked the cop what was going to happen to the purse. cop said theyd check to see if a police report was filed on the person, if not theyd call next of kin. if no one claimed it, it would sit in storage.

and that was the end of it.
