Re: Commercials with non-existent target demographics
[ QUOTE ]
You mean strange towns like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Kansas City etc. I don't know about the sunscreen, but 30 year old white guys playing street ball isn't that rare. Re: Commercials with non-existent target demographics
Since I moved I don't have a regular basketball game, but in my mid 30's I did. Played outside in racially integrated areas playing with all races and I used sunblock.
I normally would have played polo of course, but I'm insecure and wanted to feel urban and hip. edit: there were a lot of us - also the pick up games at my gym are also very integrated by age and race, but indoors so no sunblock. |

Cliff notes - Are such individuals really that rare? [/ QUOTE ] I dunno man. I've lived a few places, not all over obviously, and I would say I know at least as many white guys as the average white guy. I know precisely zero white guys who play street ball in the mid-thirties and beyond. This isn't to say I don't know otherwise physically active and healthy middle aged white guys, but specifically street ball (outside obv as it necessitates coppertone) just seems like a group of people that doesn't exist. I could be wrong I guess, but I roundly reject that possibility |

Re: Commercials with non-existent target demographics
mbillie - Do you play outdoor pick-up hoops?
If so, then are you really saying you have never played with any mid-30's guys? That seems weird to me. If you don't play, then I think it would be easy to find some courts with some middle-age white guys. Just because in your circle of friends you don't know any middle-aged basketball players doesn't mean they don't exist. If you lived/worked in Memphis I'm guessing you wouldn't know any soccer players either unless you actually played. OTOH, I know dozens among the hundreds who play for one rec-league team or another. |

Re: Commercials with non-existent target demographics
I'm not a regular basketball player... in fact I'm probably the worst basketball player on the face of the earth. However I find it fun (sort of) and I have played pickup basketball outdoors I'd say at least ten or fifteen times in the last 3 years, which is a sufficient sample size for me. I've never played with anyone older than me, mostly young black high school kids who whooped the asses of my friends and I.
But whether or not there are "any" isn't exactly the point, I don't think it's a commonly identified-with demographic and it seems bizarre to me to use specifically this demographic in multiple commercials as a marketing technique. |
