Freakin' Handley.

[/ QUOTE ]

Handley was the object of one of my favorite spontaneous stadium chants ever. The "Ray Must Go" chant had become standard at the Meadowlands throughout most of the 92 season (they lost their home games to the Cowboys, Redskins, and Eagles), and the media had a ball covering it, and everyone pretty much knew he was gone at the end of the season.

The last game of the year was at the Vet, and the Giants lost in typical lackluster fashion. The Eagles fans, having secured the game and the season sweep by the 4th quarter, starting chanting "Ray Must Stay, Ray Must Stay." It was pretty funny at the time.

But yeah, tough luck that he was sandwiched between two HOF'ers. The big thing was Hostetler over Simms. And the defense going from 26th to 1st after Reeves took over is pretty damaging. But I agree, tough to evaluate accurately.

Cool - somebody on this forum is as old as me!
I didn't realize that Giants team was 1st in defense.

That last game vs. Dallas really pissed me off. IIRC, LT sorta came back from the dead & got a couple sacks, the crowd was going nuts, Hampton looked like he was wearing down the Cowboys D towards the end, John Madden making his standard "these Giants fans are the best" comment...it just felt like they had the game. I thought the Bills could've taken it home that year if Dallas had to go the wildcard route.

Considering the clout of a college coach vs. a pro coach within their respective organizations, I think it's generally more difficult to correctly assign blame to a pro coach when his team fails. The college coach, on the other hand, can really f*ck up an organization, so I nominate RICK NEUHEISEL...

Nobody could win with those awful bulls teams, although he was a bad NBA coach, but he was a top 10 coach in CBB at Iowa State.

Saying he was a top 10 CBB coach is a pretty big stretch. I could name 10 coaches but I'd like to think that won't be necessary.

A game 3-4 years ago, the Lions won the toss in OT.

Marty Mornhinweg took the wind, and deferred to Chicago, who obviously received the ball. Chicago drove down and kicked the winning field goal on the first possession of OT.

After the game, Mornhinweg said "I felt our defense could hold them and we'd win with the wind."

WTF.

That alone should make him the worst coach ever. I can't believe I had never heard this story before.

This forum hates on Coaches who are afraid to try anything different and bashes people for results oriented thinking yet everyone ridicules Mornhinweg without even considering his decision in critical terms.

The wind was a major factor in the game. The Bears went for for it on 4th and 3 rather than try a 47 yard FG in OT, which was well within Edinger's range in normal conditions. The 40 yarder that eventually won the game barely cleared the bar.

As far as I know, Mornhinweg's decision to take the wind hasn't ever been critically proven wrong, its just been ridiculed for going against convention. His decision to accept a penalty rather than let the bears face 4th and 8 or a 53 yard FG might have been the mistake that kept him from looking like a mad genius that day.
