Its not really possible to stop this kind of attack. Much more sophisticated websites than 2+2 have been brought down by denial-of-service attacks. I'm not saying this was an intentional attack, but the method was the same.

It wasn't exactly a DoS attack, as I really doubt NuStar was using distributed computing to take down the site.

It sounds like the hardware/software used by twoplustwo isn't intelligent enough to automatically block IP's that are hammering the site and increasing CPU load, as well as bandwidth. That is a design problem. And the problem still exists, and the solution chosen by the admins is just a band-aid to get people to not increase page views for their own amusement.

The problem still exists and if someone really wanted to take down the site again I'm guessing it wouldn't be all that hard.

I also think now that this is out in the open it's fairly immature and self-serving of EDD to carry on about this "feature" being disabled, saying about how important it is to his 2+2 reading experience - when the real issue is that he seems upset that his thread designed to get page hits because another poster was hammering the site with refreshes (almost certainly with his knowledge but whatever) got neutered by the 1000+ thing. Either that or it's a really massive coincidence.
