[ QUOTE ] Is abstinence now mainstream... [/ QUOTE ] What's wrong with abstinence? [/ QUOTE ] I'll take that as a rhetorical question. On the other hand, as a birth control method and STD preventative, abstinence has proven to be wonderfully ineffective with teens who receive abstinence-only sex education having much higher pregnancy and STD rates. |

As a birth control method and STD preventative, abstinence is 100% effective. I don't know what an abstinence only sex education is.

[/ QUOTE ] Abstinence as a behavior is effective, but not as a policy. And the latter doesn't do a good job of causing the former. The thing is, these balls seem to imply that a father owns his daughter's virginity, until he gives it, and her, to another man. That's why they're dumb, and wrong, and a lot of other things. (this part's not directed toward you, amplify, lol) |

As a birth control method and STD preventative, abstinence is 100% effective. I don't know what an abstinence only sex education is. [/ QUOTE ] Instead of teaching kids about condoms and STDs, they teach kids not to have sex. The problem is that when they do start having sex, they don't know about condoms and STDs and are thus more likely to get pregnant or get STDs. |

Re: Fathers, Watch Your Daughters
Do you mean that they don't tell children that condoms and STDs exist, or that they just tell kids that abstinence is the only method available, as opposed to being the preferred method?
Also, this story in the Washington Post indicates that an abstinence-only education has no impact whatsoever on condom use. Where did you get your statistics? Apparently most kids don't use them regardless of their education. I'm not advocating, I just think that everyone has a knee-jerk reaction that the people in the OP are stupid and harmful, when maybe they are just quaint and old-fashioned. Also, according to my studies, 16 year-old boys and President Bush seem to both have an inborn aversion to pulling out, even when everyone tells them to. |

[/ QUOTE ] Neither. They tell the kids about condoms and STDs, but only that condoms are not effective in preventing STDs. [ QUOTE ] Also, this story in the Washington Post indicates that an abstinence-only education has no impact whatsoever on condom use. Where did you get your statistics? Apparently most kids don't use them regardless of their education. [/ QUOTE ] I was under the impression as well that a well-rounded sex education curriculum increases condom use, but my 30 second google search didn't turn up anything. |
