Tilt Prevention
I am an aspiring professional, currently logging on average about 30 hours/week playing 300maxNLHE. I feel I have a very good understanding of the odds and tactics of NLHE, and I consider myself adept at reading opponents and following through with the necessary actions that my read compels. However, the one area in my game that I am struggling mightily with is my tendency to go on tilt after a particularly tough break. It seems no matter what I try, be it taking a walk, taking a break, deep breathing, having a smoke, or anything else popularly recommended (short of cashing out), I can't stop a bad beat from opening a black whole that sucks in all my chips. Earlier today I watched $600 evaporate before my eyes after having KK cracked by a calling station, and I am doubly determined now not to let this happen to me again. Any ideas/recommendations to keep my temper and discipline in check?

Re: Tilt Prevention
it's cause when you take a beat you shy away instead of eating the 'suffering' or the feeling of anger/embarrassment/'bad' feeling. that hiatus where you suspend reality while you practice avoidance is like hell. if you're not scared of hell or don't avoid hell it's no problem, you take your beating like a man and get on with things. it's when you avoid the pain that you lose touch and enter the tilt dimension where rationality and clarity are obscured by the ego's fear-based defense mechanisms.

Re: Tilt Prevention
How do you generally deal with frustration or unexpected difficulty in other aspects of your life? Everyone has different coping mechanisms and the strategies that you utilize to persevere through other adverse events are worthy of exploration and possibly can be utilized to help with tilt.

Re: Tilt Prevention
Don't play when you lose. It's that simple. If you play live, bring 1 or 2 buyins to a session with no ATM card backup. If you play online, close the application when you get sucked out.

Re: Tilt Prevention
I personally try my best to "embrace the variance" if your making the right plays then in the long run you should profit.
My main problem is when i make a bad play make a bad read (guessing villian's range completly wrong or whatever) i go into supercrazymonkeytilt mode and donk off a BI or two and before quitting for the day. |

Re: Tilt Prevention
Step 1: accept that there will always be beats
Step 2: accept that there will always be tilt Step 3: work on reducing tilt; reduce how often you tilt, reduce how long you tilt, reduce how bad you tilt Good luck |
