Stupid experiment.

I bet people could have known who the guy was and still passed him by.

During rush hour a person's priorities are set on getting to work on time, not bothering trying to figure out if the music beneath the hustle and bustle is better than what you normally hear, being played by someone better than normally would.

And LOL at the lady who actually recognized the guy and threw him a $20. If Eddie Van Halen were playing guitar outside my local shopping mall, the last thing I would do would be to toss him a bone. It's either a stunt or the guy is doing it out of the goodness of his heart, he doesn't need my $20.

Am I bad for asking what makes it important that this guy should be given money OR appreciated just because he is awesome at playing a violin?

It isn't like it is something necessary for everyone to appreciate.

32 bucks in 43 minutes? Anyone wanna start an awesome street band with me? We could do gangsta rap in downtown portland.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was $32 only because a woman recognized him at the end and put a $20 in.

They didn't count that in the total.

"It was the most astonishing thing I've ever seen in Washington," Furukawa says. "Joshua Bell was standing there playing at rush hour, and people were not stopping, and not even looking, and some were flipping quarters at him! Quarters! I wouldn't do that to anybody. I was thinking, Omigosh, what kind of a city do I live in that this could happen?"

[/ QUOTE ]

This woman sounds incredibly annoying.

Yup, basically. I don't blame anyone that didn't realize that the guy was talented or didn't give him money, I almost definitely would have done the same thing, depending on my mood that morning.

I thought it was an interesting article, though.

I think the violinist had outsized expectations of the American public's reaction, during rush hour, to his classical violin prowess.
