No, I'm just an idiot.

I'm playing a course next week with a hole like the picture, but the drop off from tee to green is like 100 feet. We played it once earlier in the year and had no clue what club to hit. I think I hit PW which is about 135 normally, and flew the green.

Using pythagorean theorem, I guess A is about 125.

Yes.
It will, however, play significantly shorter.

I've played at some older courses where, if there wasn't hazard between the tee and the green, the question would be more like this:

and "A" would be the correct answer in those cases. It's annoying when there's a "U"-shaped gully in the fairway, because it makes the posted yardage a lot longer than the actual hole plays.

Not a stupid question.

Yardages are usually measured along the ground, but it is suggested they are measured by air on extreme holes. So the answer may be neither A or B, but it likely should be B. Good luck.

I personally don't know of any hole that states a yardage with the elevation taken into consideration.

Did they tell you in the clubhouse, "hole #12 is 165 yards including the downhill so play it at 165."

This seems weird. Not saying it doesn't happen, I just haven't ever seen it.

along the ground. I hit PW 135 aswell and i hit it on a 171 yard hole at my course with an insane drop off at stuck it close. I generally add 1 club for every 30-40 feet.

Whoa, then you must blow it WAY over the downhill holes.

CrazyEyez, remember there are no stupid questions...

Also, I guess I never took the time to consider the three possible scenarios here. I just assumed it was a straight line down/up at the target, where if it's a dogleg it's to a fixed point or two in the fairway, then to the center of the green.

I have read the suggested method on doglegs is to take what would be a reasonable line from the tee into the fairway, then to the green for the yardage.
