A pretty boring article really. The idea is good, but the interview was lame. Just because Brian interviewed him though everyone gets a woody even though he asks the same questions everyone else asks!

I guess what else can he say that he hasn't said before?

[/ QUOTE ]He said he had guaranteed backing if he busted, so not risking a lot in a good highstakes games would just have been very bad financial sense. Especially considering that those games likely were incredibly soft.

Taking shots is a huge part of sound financial management in a game like poker were the stakes are so varied, and if you easily can get backed your effective bankroll is far larger than your liquid assets.

Obv i havent done any reasearch which id have done a night of ahead of time, but going off memory and imagination:

Id have asked for more detail on his views of online poker such as if he plays online for more than low stakes promotion of Doyles Room and if not why not.

Id have asked about the huge downswing he had in the big game. I would have probably linked that in to his comment about playing for money and not for ego.

Id have asked about how he is reputed to be one of the people who pushed cheating out of poker back in the 60s and in light of any answer he gave on that id lead into the absolute scandal.

Id ask where he sees the future of poker going, and what his general views are on the US govs outlawing of online gambling and try and get some kind of linked in quote about he used to gamble illegally when he was a road gambler in his early days.

Something about how Todd and Todds sister got into poker (obv Todd further into it) and whether he sees it as a bad thing hence him not teaching them or whether he simply wanted them to choose their own lives and walk their own path.

With these grandaddy's of the present day games you have tons of great stories. I'd be more interested in hearing about the darker sides of the game from the early days. The guns, robberies, fixes, mobsters, rolling big fish, etc. stories seem alot more interesting from a guy like Doyle than his opinion on online poker, donkaments or BR management. Guys like Doyle have seen and been involved in [censored] that most can't imagine.

It probably has a lot to do with the environment in which he was playing. He had no opportunity for much of his career to walk into a casino at any time, play the hours he needs to make his nut at the stakes that make sense for his bankroll.

Instead he was on the road chasing games. Undoubtedly there were stretches of time where there were no games running. And you don't turn down a game under those circumstances, so when you find a game you play whatever the stakes are, whatever the version of the game is, whatever the oddball rules there might be, whoever the competition is. Although it's certainly possible bankroll managment issues played a factor, particularly with away from the table spending, I don't know that I'd view his repeated bustos as necessarily poor bankroll management, as much as an unavoidable risk of a pro player under the game conditions as they existed in the pre-modern environment.
