I think you're friend is right. Why not just take the good odds and break him if you hit?

I just felt that his line looked so much like a mediocre ace or small flush draw and that he would fold both.....dunno.

Tangling with a maniac is already a bumpy ride. Just have some patience and punish him when you have the goods.

I don't think you have much FE on the turn against this type of player.
Just call.

Hes never folding an ace and hes giving you insane odds. Don't be afraid of the call button, it wont bite.

I would have been very happy to get such odds on the turn, despite his donk bet. But the bet means hes not going away so call and hit river.
