Default College basketball Mid-Majors

George Mason went to the final four last year, and this year the mid-majors are knocking off teams left and right.

Butler won the preseason NIT today, by beating Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee, and Gonzaga (which beat North Carolina to get to the title game) and are allowing 55.3 points per game.

The college basketball season is still really young, but this is shaping up to be one hell of a season.

This is why college basketball is awesome and college football sucks.

Missouri St. beat Wisconsin today too. Missouri Valley is a hell of a conference.

I'm guessing he means that they're irrelevant in terms of winning national titles. Of course, that would mean that the Illini are just as irrelevant in basketball as they are in football.

Wichita State is looking a lot better early on than I thought they would. They are about to get beaten by LSU tomorrow, but I think by February they will be a very tough matchup for anyone in the country.

Actually Illini basketball is much more irrelevant than Illini Football.

He must have not noticed that one of probably the 10 best mid-major teams historically (although mediocre this year) Miami Redhawks took the Illini down to the wire last night, and probably should have won the game.

As a proud Butler fan and student, I love cheering on the midmajors and sticking it to the money hungry BCS conferences who are afraid to play on the road, and sometimes even at neutral sites. Articles like these just continue to make major college basketball teams so unlikable that I rarely will find myself rooting for anyone but the little guy.

Irrelevant is perhaps the wrong word, but the sentement is correct. Mid-major schools are great for early season fun, and tournament upsets, but when was the last time that a mid-major won the tournament?
Don't get me wrong, I love seeing a Missouri State beat Wisconsin, but it really doesn't matter in the long run. And yes, I think that the big schools should schedule more mid-majors. However, I can totally understand their thinking. If they win, they were supposed to win. If they lose, then it is held against them come selection Sunday. It's a no-win deal.
