i guess the boss couldn't keep quiet for too long

from foxsports.com:

George Steinbrenner has kept quiet for most of the season, but he sounded off in a big way Saturday night.

The Yankees owner told The Record of North Jersey that manager Joe Torre will likely be fired if the Yankees don't rally to beat Cleveland.

"His job is on the line. I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series," said Steinbrenner.

The Yankees currently trail the best-of-5 series 0-2.

It would be the third straight first-round exit for the Yankees, whose flop vs. the Tigers last season nearly led to Torre's firing.

He also had some choice words for umpire Bruce Froemming, who allowed Game 2 to continue despite an infestation of Lake Erie gnats.

"The umpire was full of (expletive)."

As for Alex Rodriguez, Steinbrenner hopes to keep the slugger around a while longer.

"I think we'll re-sign him. I think he's going to have a good run the rest of the (postseason). I think he realizes New York is the place to be, the place to play. A lot of this (postseason) is laying on his shoulders, you know, but I think he's up to it."

Torre better hope so.

With Sweet Lou off the market I don't know who I hope becomes the Yankees manager (from a Red Sox fan perspective). Bowa I guess?

Girardi will probably get it. Either him or Mattingly. I'm pulling for Girardi.

Oh, so it's trolling when I do it but when it was done several times during the season in the Red Sox thread by Yankee fans whenever the lead go shrunk it was just good fun.

I'm sure if somehow fortunes get reversed in the next few days, the quote will get thrown back at us but guess what? I won't be whining that Yankee fans are trolling.

It makes sense for Torre to resign unless Yankees win. His contract is over, he won't get another huge one anyway from the Yanks, and his era was over like 3-4 yrs ago. Because of his amazing era one, he earned a chance at smooth transition into era two, but it hasn't gone that way. Time to go.

BTW, Girardi would be an awful fit in NY. He has zero reputation at this point to fall back on in any argument, so he'd either have to take massive $hit from Steinbrenner or get fired like 3 months in once he takes a stand. Same thing would have happened to Torre actually had he not developed an eternal resume 2-3 years in.

Bowa would be a perfect fit -- he's basically the polar opposite of Girardi and Torre.

maybe I was angry because the Yankees just lost to a bunch of bugs... (or the real reason that we scored 4 runs in 20 innings). Maybe I was being irrational? Maybe as a Red Sox fan you might understand that anger?
