Yeah, but who believed that? The tobacco executives were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. The hearings were the real joke, the tobacco industry was an easy whipping boy for politicians looking to score points and eventually fill their states' coffers.

They were under oath. If nobody believed them they should be in jail for committing a criminal act. Next to impossible to prove without a wiretap or something similar but still. It makes a mockery of the whole system.

The whole system was a mockery to begin with... which was the point being made.

If you want to talk about broken oaths which destroy the system, start with the oath to support the constitution...
