Default Set-Up & Wash Rant

I am an online player with only a moderate amount of live game experience. I just cannot understand for the life of me how any one player can randomly call for a set-up or a wash of the cards and be granted it every time.

In my experiences, it is always an older nit that is running card dead that makes these requests. Live play is way to slow as it is.

I would be interested to hear some thoughts from long time live players or casino personel on this. What if I want to run to the bathroom, can I just call for a set-up right before my big blind and essentially use that as a time-out to get back in time?

Wow, sounds like you've been playing $4/8 LHE.hehe I know EXACTLY what you mean. I play mostly limit in B&M's and I get sooo tired of the "NEW SETUP" demand. I say demand because these old nits don't ask for a new setup, they usually demand it in rudest way possible.

And you mentioned being older players....dang right. I've yet to see anyone under the age of about 50-60 demand for a new setup. It's always the old regulars who lose day after day and keep blaming the cards. I was playing at the Horseshoe in Shreveport, La. last weekend and there were two old regulars, a man and a woman, both over 70 sitting side by side. They were calling down with crap and both loosing their stacks as usual. The woman called for a new setup and the old man lit up like he'd just seen fire for the first time. He said "Oh ya! Great idea, these two decks are treating me horribly! Dealer get us some new cards so I can win a pot!" Guess what? The new cards didn't help.lol

What a total waste of time. BTW, playing on a non-shufflemaster table this weekend at the Eldorado in Shreveport, I counted for 6 downs and we averaged about 10-11 hands every down, the max was 12 and the minimum was 8. When you are only getting 18-22 hands an hour, a new setup is a big waste of time.

Ok rant</end>.lol

chalk7,

If you don't ask for setups or wash the cards when you're losing, things will never change.

The last two times I've seen someone ask for a new set-up, it was a pushy thirty-something woman in both cases.

I really don't mind when someone asks for the cards to be washed (and some dealers don't shuffle very well, so an occassional wash is good). That takes no time at all. I have seen played of every age, sex, race and species ask for a new set up. Bad players come in all shapes and sizes.

I never see requests for new setups in Atlantic City or Connecticut. Where is this standard?

The only time I ever ask for one is if cards are marked/bent/damaged in some way and I always point out why I'm making the request to the table. There's really no other need for it. Personally I think they should not allow for new setups to be called unless there's a legitimate reason for it - running bad is NOT a legitimate reason.

At our local room that's the policy - in fact, they don't even replace a whole deck if a card is damaged, they just snag the damaged one and replace it from a matching deck. I for one am happy with this arrangement, but occasionally some doorknob will throw a hissy fit about it.

Every hour on the hour at the Bike. So annoying.

Come to the Bike and call for a setup on the hour. I'll bet you 10k it doesn't come unless you bend the cards.
