Why are Las Vegas cabbies so weird about tips?

Apparently for some of you that live in Freewayville, having someone "drive you around" is a novel experience, but for those of us that live in major urban centers it's literally an everyday activity.

When you buy a book from the family-run used book store down the street, do you pay more than the price listed on the book jacket? Do you tip the guy at 7-Eleven a buck when you buy a Slurpee? Do you send the utility company a little something extra?

If you really want to do something good for the world, then figure out how much you increase your carbon footprint by taking cabs instead of public transit and donate a proportionate amount to an environmental charity.

Again, if pinching pennies is that big of a deal to you, I would suggest that you purchase a used car.

Wow. If your budget is stretched so thin that you can't afford to tip the dealer $2 for every pot, perhaps you should not leave the house and spend less time on live poker and more time at work. Or school.

Seems to me that a waitress can easily deliver about a zillion times more drinks to customers than a cab-driver can run passengers around.

I guess the waitress might have to split her tips with the bartenders though. I have no idea how that works.

Oh, definitely not. Cabs in London are worse. I was there for two weeks recently, same route every morning. One day I take a taxi that uses a different route (goes over crowded Oxford St. instead of driving the small side streets). I was merely asking if he was sure this was the faster way, cause I usually go a different route. He pulled over and told me to "get the fsck out" because he is the driver and knows what route to take....

I was left nonplussed (not indifferent!) at the sidewalk.

One other time I didnt check my money and noticed not before we arrived at the target that my smallest bill was 50 Pounds. Okay, I admit, thats not really cool. But the taxi driver berated me for like 5 minutes how can I possibly not check my bills, etc... instead of just letting me change in the store next to us (which i suggested immediately).

Well, only point is: There are other places where cab drivers are hostile

Speaking of the taxi-thing in other countries:

When we went to Peru the game is to strike the deal with the cabbie when they pull over. There are no meters or rate-structures or anything (not that i noticed anyway).
You tell them where you're going and then the bargaining begins.

For a 40-minute drive or something the cabbie wanted $6 but my GF's mom said no thanks. 3 or 4 cabbies took a pass on that one but finally she got one who would take us there for the $3 price she was looking for.

That was in Lima.

When we went into the mountains to the city of Cuzco it was the law there that all taxi-rides within the city are 2 soles which is about $0.60.
5-10 minute ride across town: $0.60. plus maybe another $0.30 tip.

In my experience in London, a lot of cabbies and minicab drivers are BIG gamblers. So that's why they need the tips.
