Default Trip Report Atlantic City

After a few requests, I am going to post a report of a recent trip I took to Atlantic City.

My trip started out probably the worst that you can possibly imagine. I was leaving from downtown Pittsburgh at 4:30 on Thursday. The after work traffic is already frustrating enough. It was our first snow fall and roads were slick and accidents were everywhere. The Pennsylvania turnpike was also closed for 2 hours+. So yes, I'm on a roll. I had reservations for the Tropicana. With a poker room rate on the weekday, the room was $49. I communicated with the front desk to begin with that I'd be late, but not this late. They were very understanding and no biggie. Was able to get into Atlantic City with my girlfriend and one of my best friends at like 2 a.m. They wanted to go to bed right away and start playing early in the morning after some sleep. I said yeah right, I am here I'm buying into a game. I think i found the secret guys.

*Buy into a game around 2:30-3 a.m. ready to play. Everyone else was drunk and tired going on 4 a.m. Very loose table, lots of crazy calls and bluffs. If someone made a hand, they got paid, bigtime. I played 1/2 no limit at a 9 handed table that got broken up to a 5 handed game and they combined tables at like 5 am. I found myself falling asleep in my seat. I sat down with $300. I was up to almost 7 stacks of $100 in $5 chips. I was amazed how many pots i took down with people having like nothing. As Norman Chad says, it was going to take a court order to stop some of these guys from seeing a flop. I cashed out up over $385 for the session. Went up to my room and was really happy I won some money to play with the rest of the weekend.

*Had an amazing breakfast at Country Kitchen Restaurant right outside the the Trop, behind the Day's Inn that is right across the street, on the Boardwalk. Really good menu with big proportions with a decent price. Highly recommend it for breakfast or brunch.

* My girlfriend and buddy wanted to go to the Borgata. The cash game tables were insane on Friday afternoon due to the people who were knocked out of the tournament at noon, were all playing cash games. Their new poker room is absolutely amazing. It was the first time I got a chance to play in it since it was relocated and expanded, I believe this was done this past summer. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. What a beautiful set up. It's on the same floor as the table games and slots, but it's own area, so huge!!!!! Many more tables and it's just a beautiful place to play poker. I bought in around 1. Three guys at my table were talking about getting knocked out of the tournament and hands that happened. Overall though, my table was a very fun mix of personalities. I was really enjoying my session. I was with about 4 action junkies on this table that were calling anything to the flop and paying people off if they hit it. I was up a little over a hundred before i sucked out bigtime on a hand where I was in with a maniac. Not bad after playing about 5 hours of solid poker without any serious bad beats, and to suck out, felt nice. I think that makes up for all the online harshness, haha. Also shook John Myung's hand as he walked by me while I was ready to step up and cash out my chip tray's. He probably could've cared less who i was since i was holding tray's that held mostly $5 chips with a $25's, hahaha. I just said hi and I'm sure he had other better things to do than stop and talk to someone. He's really short. I'm 6'7" though so everyone probably says that, haha.

*Had a few coronas while playing and I had to leave to catch a ferry ride to Delaware to visit a good friend for the rest of the weekend who was just recovering from surgery. I cashed out up a little over $400 for that session. Up almost $800 in two sessions on the same day all before 5 pm. Was very unexpected. The action was just there though, few hundred dollar pots almost every single hand. Was like playing 3/6 or something.

*Went to the gift shop to buy a friend a few decks of cards. Didn't realize they don't sell any decks used on the floor. Does anyone know why not??? I bought a few at the trop for like a buck that they use on their black jack tables. I got a great burger at a restaurant located right near the buffet. I even forget the name because I was so hungry I just wanted to sit down and eat my food. We were in a hurry to leave to board the Ferry on time.

*Melanie Reid is the poker manager at the Tropicana and she does an phenominal job. She answered all my questions I had about arriving late and had everything hooked up for the poker rate and everything. She runs a pretty good room over there. The Borgata is still the best place by far though. Unbeatable atmosphere and best drink selection for players. The hottest waitresses by far as well. They had $5 blackjack and $5 roulette tables going at Borgata during the day. I didn't know they went that low there. Wish I had a chance to play some. It was a great trip overall and just wish it got off to a better start. The finish was good and I'm looking forward to going back. The roomates at the Trop are just tough to beat and the rooms aren't too bad either. The South Tower rooms are a little tight. The other Tower rooms, (Not even sure what it is called) are really nice. I stayed in those last time, they are much bigger with a bigger bathroom. Looking forward to setting up another trip in the spring hopefully.

do you mean Borgata BJ or poker decks? while paper BJ decks available to the public varies by casino (and whatever stock is on hand that particular day), plastic poker decks are rarely available to take home. not only would they would be pretty expensive because of the higher production cost, there's definitely some long-term security issues even if they drill holes in the cards and mark the sides (which would make them equally useless for a legit home game as well, presumably). also, the casino probably recycles the same plastic decks every shift or setup change (after cleaning and re-sequencing) so the ones that they throw out are already marked or damaged badly. therefore the actual number of sets they could actually release out of the room could be as few as 10-20 per week, if not less. and then how would they fairly distribute them to customers? better to just not offer them in the first place.

used Borgata BJ decks do tend to be popular though. I usually see them offered for slight premium prices on ebay and casino souvenir specialty shops vs. other hotels, and sometimes you can't find any for sale at all. useless trivia - the first-generation Borg decks are made by Bee/USPC, and are much better quality than the Paulson decks currently in use today.
