Default Rank the Mets\' collapse

Assuming that the Mets continue to blow their lead - and don't even make the playoffs - how would this rank in terms of biggest leads lost in baseball?

Is blowing a lead of about 7 games in the last few weeks historically notable (particularly when you consider they had the best record in the entire national league)?

I think the 64 Phillies would win this discussion, followed by the 78 Red Sox. I think it's still rather unlikely the Mets miss the playoffs - BP still has them at 90%.

Don't you think that a blown 7 game lead in the last month of the season would be a bigger collapse than the Red Sox blowing a 14 game lead with half the season left? (Or perhaps my memory is off about the numbers involved).

no team has ever blown a 7 game lead on september 12th. Ever. Two teams have blown a 6 1/2 game lead on septemebr 12th. Mets had a 7 game lead on september 12th.

So it would technically be the biggest choke ever from sept 12th

What did the Red Sox do in 1978 when I was a kid that scarred me for the rest of my life. Okay, looked it up, I guess not so bad, 14 game lead early, and 10 game lead later, I forget now when did it say July or August? The Bucky [censored] Dent playoff game. Actually sounds like the Sox might equal that this year, but Wild Card sort of allievates the pressure.

Called the newspaper sport line every day for the scores. Check the box scores every day in the morning paper. I was 9, I had all the baseball cards for that year. Nothing to do but swimming and baseball.

It actually sounds like some kid who's a Mets fan might get it worse than I did.

After checking, I see that the 1964 Phillies' collapse was worse. They were up 6 1/2 games with just 12 left (then lost 10 straight to finish 1 behind).

Still, this year's Mets - should the collapse continue - seemingly will rank in the top 5 of all time.
