Re: Driving from Chicago to Phoenix - What should I see
check out the grand canyon. i stopped there on my way out to vegas this summer. well worth it.
i went on the south kaibab trail. you hike down a trail from the rim, then it continues out onto this short peninsula. from there you have almost a 360 degree view of the canyon. hike took about 3 1/2 hrs total. it was more interesting than i expected. |

Re: Driving from Chicago to Phoenix - What should I see
The one place in western Nebraska worth seeing if you like history is Scott's Bluff National Monument. It's slightly out of the way, but the Oregon Trail is still there and you can still walk on it, which is pretty cool if you like that sort of thing. The National Park Service makes pretty much anything interesting if you're willing to stop and look. Chimney Rock is also in the area.

I live in Tulsa. Nothing worth stopping for unless you just LOVE Double A Baseball.

Route 66.
When you get to Kingman, let me know, you must see the haunted hotel (has a great bar!)(Brunswick Hotel) Then you drive to Flagstaff (2 hours from here), see the Grand Canyon, onward to Phx. T |

Re: Driving from Chicago to Phoenix - What should I see
Not sure if you're more interested in places/towns to visit or nice scenery, but southeastern Utah has some spectacular scenic drives. Maybe a little out of your way, but Blanding->Bluff->Mexican Hat->Monument Valley->Kayenta is an awesome drive, and perfect for entering Grand Canyon park from the east.
