Default Hansbrough, Lawson Returning to UNC; Wright Undecided

Very welcome news out of Chapel Hill this week.

If Wright comes back, I pity the fools that take the court against the Heels next season. I also pity Paulus and the others that play hoops 8 miles down the road.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- Sophomore Tyler Hansbrough and freshman Ty Lawson announced at the team banquet Tuesday night that they will return to UNC next season. According to head coach Roy Williams, freshman Brandan Wright has not yet made his decision.

Hansbrough: "I'm not ready for the next step. Playing another year with Coach Williams will help me improve my game individually and there are also team things I want to accomplish. And college is a great experience for me and I'd like to be here another year. If I improve the way I want next year, you never know what could happen."

Lawson: "I just was thinking that I liked college basketball too much ... I'm real excited because we'll have basically the same exact team and losing only a couple of players. I can't wait for next year and am ready to make another deep run."

Williams on Wright: "He's very relaxed about it, he's not going to be pushed, when the decision is made it'll be made by Brandan - with very slight input from me and some input from his mom and I honestly believe no one else. ... I just know there will be nothing done until Friday of next week."

How good is Graves?

Even without Wright back the team will be very good.

C: Tyler, Stephenson
PF: Thompson, Stepheson
SF: Ginyard, Green, Graves
SG: Ellington, Green
PG: Lawson, Thomas

I don't think Thompson is that worse offensively, but I think he's worse defensively than Wright by a long run due to Wright's length.

But of the major schools that could compete, UNC looks pretty good next year. So does Memphis (everyone back e/c Hunt and Rose is coming of the major players), and some others if players come back (G'town (doubtful), GT (if all come back), etc.).

Eric went to the same school as Oden and Conley, Lawrence North. I don't think their anywhere near the same player (Tyler and Montross). Montross was better defensively and Tyler is definitely better offensively. Montross of course had height while Tyler has hustle and strength.

No way, Hansbrough is much better.

(sigh) this is not good news for the royal blue.

their stories just seemed similar to me. I remember Montross stayed an extra year at UNC, and iirc he hurt his draft position (he was going to be the #1 or #2 pick, and ended up being #9 the next year).

I don't think Hansborough is a 'lot better', Montross was an excellent player in college. but yeah they are different.

That would be something. That would mean they both won NCAA titles during their junior seasons at UNC. Incidentally, Montross is now doing an excellent job as part of the Tar Heel Sports Network and is teamed with Woody Durham doing the call of Tar Heel games.

I was at UNC when Eric was playing and he had a sweet O.J. Bronco with Indiana plates that read "Tar Heel". He is a favorite in Chapel Hill.
