Default Russian $1 Bil contract with Venezuela

How troubling is Russia's $1 Billion contract to sell 30 Sukhoi jet aircraft and 33 helicopters to Venezuala?

The 30 Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighters are comparable to US F-15Es. These are long range fighters.

Venezuala is just 1,400 miles from Miami.

In Colombia, we are very concerned with Chavez. He is very unpredictable and is irritating everybody: Colombia, Peru, Mexico, US, Costa Rica, etc. His assistance of the FARC rebels is a pain in the butt to Colombia and a real obstacle to peace. And they were so close to getting him out of power.

I don't think Chavez is planning any kind of war of aggression. I just think he's paranoid that the US is going to attack him and is preparing a defence. At least that's what I hope is going on.

That's interesting, they way they make it sound here, Chavez is gaining popularity in most of Central and South America. I've haven't previously seen anything about his neighbors being particularly concerned with his actions. I can't imagine he would ever actually do something that would give us an excuse to act against him, though.

Its been nearly 18 years since Ive been to Bogota...a lot of change since then. I lost track of a good friend there who worked for IBM and was son of the mayor of Baranquilla. My son is Colombian, a blessing from FANA.

Colombia and Venezuela almost came to arms when Colombia seized a FARC rebel in Venezuela. Chavez interfered in the Presidential race in Peru and had a nasty exchange with the President elect. He and Vincente Fox threw insults at each other and withdrew ambassadors. While all of LatinAmerica is turning toward the left, everyone (except Evo Morales) realizes Chavez is a payaso. Why does he need these arms?
We can only hope they don't land up in the arms of the FARC or ELN.
