Default Anyone into scanning/monitoring

Im thinking about buying a scanner, no real reason other than I like this kind of stuff, and have some extra time. Scanning/monitoring has been a hobby for a long time. Im thinking about placing an order overseas for a scanner that has the cell band unlocked. Anyone else have this as a hobby?

My friend owned a really nice scanner and would listen to the police stations in downtown las vegas where we lived, he learned all the codes etc and would always make a big deal when there was some kind of major crime going down.

fwiw, Im ordering a aor digital scanner (able to p/u any cell call), it will also track analog and digital trunk systems as long as you program it correctly. It wasnt cheap, but its a pretty neat gadget that will actually be very useful.

Yeah, this stuff is pretty interesting. Most of my experience with it comes from working at the campus newspaper in college and always having the scanner on in the background. It got pretty crazy when a tornado hit campus in 2001 or when there was a murder in a parking garage a couple years later.

Is a device that can intercept cell calls illegal? Seems like it would/should be.

Please elaborate. I'm assuming you wouldn't post about it if you planned to use it for illegitimate purposes, so I really am curious.

One of my good friends has a dad who was a city cop and he would actually stay in some nights with some beers etc. just to listen to his dads scanner. I thought it was a little weird but he said it was awesome. This is in B-more so I imagine there could be some action.

I don't even know if you can monitor cell calls easily anymore... I was under the impression that you'd have to know what algorithms were being used the split the signal and have the scanner reassemble them.

It's not like in 1985-2000 when everything was analog

Its a digital scanner, and ya, you cant monitor them easily. With teh scanner Im getting I will be able to "listen" in on the calls, but it will be all garbage. I have a guy that is getting me software to break the [censored] encryption, and along with a laptop it should be trivial. I dont know if I really want to go through all that hassle, becuase 1. Im really [censored] if I get caught and 2. its not worth it as I have easier ways to bug cells 3. i really just dont need to be doing this stuff, its more of a challlenge/coolness factor than anything else
