Is Johnny Chan a Liar??
Hey i'm an all NL guy myself, but I heard Johnny Chan say on tv last night his first timem in vegas he borrowed 300 bucks off his credit card after losing all his money on table games, went and played 10/20 limit with it, and made thirty thousand in one week and never looked back. Now i've heard that even the best players don't make much more than one or two big blinds an hour in limit, sounds like a pretty outrageously exaggerated claim to me...

Re: Is Johnny Chan a Liar??
Wrong forum.
P.S. Maybe he moved up in limits as the week went on. |

Re: Is Johnny Chan a Liar??
That figure of 1-2 BB/100 is an estimate of what a winning player could expect to make over the long run. It doesn't mean that every 100 hands, the player's bankroll increases by exactly one big bet. It could increase by 1000 big bets in one set of 100 hands, and decrease by 998 big bets in the next 100 hands, but over the long run, it will average around 1-2BB/100 if that is his or her longterm expectation.
Yes, it is completely feasible that he made that much playing 10-20 limit in one week. It would require a great run of cards, and tons of hours at the table, but I don't think it's out of the question. More likely though, he made a bunch playing 10-20, then moved up to 20-40 or 30-60. |

Re: Is Johnny Chan a Liar??
That's nothing compared to Freddy Deeb's claim in Cardplayer that he turned $60 into $100k in one night just by moving up limits.

Re: Is Johnny Chan a Liar??
From Johnny's own website
[ QUOTE ] It'd usually take me about half an hour to blow it. Then I'd wander around the casino for a while and eventually go up to my room and sleep until the plane was scheduled to leave. I went to Las Vegas on these junkets about once every eight months for the next four years or so, getting broke in short order every time, until finally I decided to explore the town a little more fully. I caught a bus to Glitter Gulch, which is what downtown Vegas is called, and sooner or later I found myself in the Golden Nugget Casino. To my surprise, they had a poker room. Before seeing that, I had no idea they played poker in Las Vegas. I looked the game over and felt pretty confident that I could beat it, but I had already lost all my money on the table games at the Landmark. The only thing of value I had was my gold necklace. I walked outside to Fremont Street, which was full of pawnshops, walked into one and got $200 for my necklace. I then turned right around and headed straight back to the Golden Nugget and got into a $10-$20 Hold-em game. I played all night long and ran that $200 into $2,000. Well, after the sun came up I finally got myself a room and went to sleep. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep more than about six hours and when I woke up all I could think about was the poker game. In less than ten minutes I was on my way downstairs to put my name on the $10-$20 list. When I entered the card room, Bill Boyd, who ran the Golden Nugget poker room, was getting together a Pot-Limit Hold-em game. There were a bunch of tough-looking regulars sitting around the table. They waved me over saying, "Johnny, you play this game, don't you?" It surprised me that they knew my name because I didn't know any of them, but I responded with, "Yeah, I guess so." I really hadn't played Pot-Limit too much, but I wasn't worried. To make a long story short, the game went for a couple of days straight and I ran that $2,000 into $30,000. I felt like I'd died and gone to heaven. [/ QUOTE ] So it was limit, and then pot limit is where he made the big score. He also said that he lost it pretty quickly at blackjack, so i'm sure he "never looked back" after that. |

Re: Is Johnny Chan a Liar??
This makes a lot more sense. It would be impossible to make $30000 at 10-20 limit in a week. If he played 24/7 he would have to average about 9 BB/hr.
