obv that guy played the hand well. He knew nobody had a hand and was trying to induce bluffs.

He played great.

PF: if he raised he would just pick up the blinds (1.5$) Now he picked up extra dollar! EV+++++++!!!

Flop: His superior reading abilites told him you two had nothing so he checked hoping you two would catch someting on the turn (like a flush). So implied odds for checking are better than betting.

Turn: See flop, except implied odds are slightly lower for checking here, because there is only one card to come, but still better than betting.

River: Why bet here? If you still had nothing you would fold, but if you had a monster like 4 jacks (which are very likely because you checked turn) he would get raised all-in and would be pot-commited to pay you off with the second best hand.
The best play is to check hoping to induce a bluff and then call.

---

You on the other hand was the one who played very badly. No one showed any strenght in the hand, yet you refused to take a stab at he pot, although you knew you can't win with 8 high by checking it down.
Atrocious play.
