"I never let school get in the way of my education" "Even if you do learn to speak correct English, whom are you going to speak it to?" -- Clarence Darrow "After School I Would Be The Only Guy On The Basketball Court, Working On My Moves, And Then Kids Would Start Showing Up With Their Soccer Balls. I Could Hold Them Off If There Were Two Or Three Of Them, But When They Got To Be 11 Or 12, I Had To Give Up The Court. It Was Either Go Home Or Be The GoalKeeper." --Kobe Bryant |

Re: Quotes/aphorisms that have actually helped you in life
As if that blind rage had washed me clean, rid me of hope; for the first time, in that night alive with signs and stars, I opened myself to the gentle indifference of the world. Finding it so much like myself — so like a brother, really — I felt that I had been happy and that I was happy again. For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate

The only difference between now and 10 years from now is the books you will read and the people you will meet.

Re: Quotes/aphorisms that have actually helped you in life
I enjoy many of the quotes posted in thsi thread. I thought I should add two of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet.
Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. -Helen Keller Life is pain. -Siddhartha Gautama The extended versions of both are even better, from two of my favorite quotable people. And I'll add one more that was said by a friend of mine. Money can't make you happy, but not having it sure can make you sad. -Pete Sweet |

Nice bump.
A few quotes that I've always taken strength from... The only limitations we have are those we set for ourselves and Do or do not... there is no try |

I find this one runs through my head from time to time when making decisions.

Re: Quotes/aphorisms that have actually helped you in life
"[The] purpose of human life is to love whoever is around to be loved."
~~Just one of the many wonderful quotations by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. (RIP) a man whom I admire perhaps more than any other, living or dead. "Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that." An admirable sentiment that our current leaders (and soon to be leaders) might do well to dwell upon. From the exceedingly eloquent and quotable Martin Luther King Jr. |
