Seems like China is gearing up for a potential conflict the US. Why do you guys think they choose this particular moment to demonstrate a military capability whose only real target are US military assets?

Despite their economy, China is still very much a totalitarian state. China is planning long-term in military matters.

China will utilize the next 20-30 years for strengthening its economy, production capacity, and military. Its buildup is reminiscent of Nazi Germany's military & productivity buildup. The USA will be weakened by its struggle with Islamic terrorists during that time, and this window will be exploited by China. Then, China will very possibly pounce and try to defeat the USA--and possibly next the world.

During the years Chinais building up and the USA is harrassed by Islamic terrorists, China will attempt to slowly exert its own expanding hegemony, and to mildly harass the USA as well, awaiting the opportune moment to strike decisively. If the USA becomes crippled by lack of military and communications satellites, and EMP attacks disable much of theUSA mainland's electronic infrastructure, the USA will be in big trouble as it will no longer possess its huge hi-tech advantage. Then China's conventional weaponry and enormous Army will become a pivotal factor.

When was the last time China invaded another country? Like 300 years ago?

China wants Taiwan. They have made several assasination attempts against pro-Western Taiwan leaders. The only thing stopping them is the military alliance between the USA and Taiwan.

If the Chi-Coms want Taiwan, they just need to wait for a Democrat like Hillary or John Kerry to be elected and then invade. The democrat 'leader' will welch on our alliance with Taiwan and China crushes them in 6 months....

China is an enemy of the USA. The first attack us in 1950 and they have been engaging in clandestine warefare against the USA since then. Including massive counterfeiting of US currency and massive theft of US technology.

BTW, China calls itself the middle kingdom. The meaning that they are the premier nation and all other nations revolve around them. Historically nations like the UK and Japan have bitch-slapped them for the last few hundred years and the Communists have a seething dislike of the West. it is ironic that the USA, who extended the hand of friendship to China from 1939-45 and saved China from the Japs, has now been targeted as an enemy. Now China attacks its former friend while Japan has become our best buddy...

I've never read Tom Clancy, but it stands to reason that it is a very plausible scenario. If anything, China has become more totalitarian in recent years, and China has had an imperialistic culture for thousands of years. Not that I don't like very much certain other aspects of Chinese culture, especially art and music. It is a rich culture, but it is also decidedly very strict and imperialistic. China is very patiently building up and modernizing with the eventual aim of winning a war with the USA, if that's what is required for China to become the world's largest hegemon.

China's military build-up makes war inevitable. Against who is the question. The USA is not the only country with military satellites. China wants Taiwan, but they want other places much much more. Look north, south and west. (We are east to them, btw...)

China doesn't want to fight us, they want to prevent us from getting involved.

Doesn't matter. Patience is a cultural virtue and long-term planning (unlike in America) is a pillar of ancient Chinese philosophy. Time is considered an integral elemental part of strategic conflict as in Sun Tzu's Art of War. Chinese culture has long held that other cultures were barbaric by comparison to its own ("foreign devils"). In the early/mid 20th century, a British ambassador received in all sincerity a letter addressed to him thusly by his Chinese counterpart, "To His Excellency The Chief Foreign Devil Envoy,..."...All cultures are NOT like our own, nor do all cultures hold similar views and values to our own...of course not all Chinese hold such views but you cannot blithely dismiss the effects of thousands of years of cultural influence upon a culture...the Chinese culture holds itself superior to other cultures (and in many ways it truly is).
