Mauer vs McCann

Let the debate begin!

For the purpose of this debate, let's make a couple of assuptions. Let's assume that they both stay healthy, and both spend most of their career at catcher. Let's also not focus as much on defense where Mauer has a clear advantage right now.

how is this even a question? mauer has the potential to be the best all around (Off + def) catcher ever. I wouldn't say McCann does. iow, i think McCann's year is more likely to be a fluke than Mauer's and we can expect Mauer to put up many big years but I wouldn't expect those from McCann.

2006 McCann, 457 PA, .329/.388/555, .311 EQA, 31 2b, 0 3b, 21 HR, AGE: 22

2005 Mauer, 550 PA, .294/.372/.411, .286 EQA, 26 2b, 2 3b, 9 HR, AGE: 22

McCann has been just as good this year despite being a year younger. McCann's age 22 year was significantly better than Mauer's age 22 year. To say there is not a debate or it's not close is naive. I'll guess that PECOTA has them very close in 2007, with McCann possibly having a slight edge offensively.
