I'm retarded and don't know how to connect the internets

I just got a new laptop. When I plug it into my cable modem, the internet doesn't work. The little taskbar icon says "local area connection status: limited or no connectivity."

Does the cable modem work with another computer? I'm guessing you opened a browser and didn't get a connection? Sometimes you'll need to log into the service before it works.

Yea, the modem works. I'm using it in my desktop right now.

your modem probably still thinks its hooked into your desktop. when you hook the mdm into your new laptop, reset it by just unplugging it from the power for a minute or so. also restart your computer if that doesnt work

Eventually you should get a router so your computers aren't going straight into the internets.

I've tried 2 different routers and couldn't get them to work.

You may want to invest in having someone come over and install the router for you. While it isn't super complicated, it isn't quite plug and play yet and can get finicky if you have multiple operating systems you want to play together.

Likely problem is your cable company links the modem to the MAC address on your regular desktop. This is why your desktop works but your laptop and router do not. I had the same problem when my original router fried and I had to buy a new one.

If you still have a router available hook it up and plug it in. Then hook your computer up to the router as well. The directions should tell you how to link to it via your web browser. Typically it's an address like 192.168.1.1

From here you can configure your settings for the router. Search for the option "clone mac address". This will then make the modem think your mac address on the router is the one that connects to the internet.

Then everything should work. I know it sounds kind of complicated but it's fairly easy. Just browse around for that clone mac address option and you'll be good to go.
