Re: Backpacking in WY / Gear List
Badger,
are you really thinking of bringing crampons/ice axe/gators? i think there's close to zero chance of you finding a spot in Wyoming where you'll need these this time of year. And i don't mean to pile on Boris, but not bringing raingear would be pretty stupid. |

Re: Backpacking in WY / Gear List
rj- I've been meaning to get one of those. Not this trip, due to the gf, as you mentioned.
Stranger- definitely not worth the weight. rj- I might pick some up. I'm gonna see what bear traffic is like where I am. If nothing else I have my whistle. You know the difference between grizzly poop and black bear poop? Grizzly poop has bear whistles in it. Fedfan- For sure! I had a camera break on me in Chile- that was frustrating. Luckily I was with my buddy who maintains a pretty nice website. td- You're correct, absolutely not for this trip. Just trying to get all my gear on the list, as well as gear that I didn't have. I'm off to the airport soon. Didn't go to bed tonight. Oops. |

Re: Backpacking in WY / Gear List
rj - for me the decision isn't so much the weight of my pack but how much true bushwhacking I have planned. For off trail hiking I recommend White's Boots and I couldn't give a stronger endorsement. Once you break these babies in you will have zero complaints.

Goretex is worthless once it gets dirty [/ QUOTE ] I've used Gore-Tex waders for the last 5 years - they get plenty dirty and take a$$ loads of abuse and have NEVER leaked. [ QUOTE ] Goretex jackets are also bulky and heavy [/ QUOTE ] What?!?! Have you heard of a Gore-Tex shell? VERY lightweight, completely waterproof, and great for layering over a fleece jacket. [ QUOTE ] If you and your girl don't have a pair of WELL BROKEN IN hiking boots, you will both be in misery if you wear hiking boots [/ QUOTE ] I agree 100%. Blisters really suck esp when you're miles in. P.S. I didn't see extra socks on your list. |

Re: Backpacking in WY / Gear List
Chapstick. This one definitely should have been in my pack. The trip went great. I also made it to Arches National Park. I may post some pics.

Re: Backpacking in WY / Gear List
So I'm not really going to write up a whole trip report as it was a pretty standard backpacknig trip. Here's a pretty picture:
However, what might be of interest to some is the website my roommate just released- MyOutdoors.net, which allows users to create journal entries with google maps and then add info and pictures. The map editor is really nice. It's low content now as it's just released. Here's the link to my WY hike: http://www.myoutdoors.net/entry.php?id=2039 And a Digg Article talking about how they display elevation graphs with sparklines. Here's the photo album of some pics from the Wind River Range and a couple from Arches. |
