Martini

Coming from Europe, I always think of the Italian vermouth when I hear martini. However, now that I live in North America I found that the term martini is used to refer to various mixed drinks.

So, what exactly counts as a martini here in North America? And does it have to contain real martini in order to get the predicate "martini"?

If it is called a Matini, it should be Gin and Vermouth. But many bars find it "chic" to call any drink in a Martini glass a Martini. Thus you have an Appletini, Chocolate Martini, etc. All of these are just regular mixed drinks.

I need a like "spray" bottle to get a mist of vermouth and wave the glass around it in teh air.

Olives too mmm. only place olives are really goot.

EDIT: Noilly Prat vermouth is the best of a rotten mixer.

In a lot of places "Martini" simply refers to an alcoholic mixed drink served in a martini glass... lame but that's how you get "apple cranraspberry rum martinis" and [censored] like that.

If you goto a real bar, they will understand that a martini is gin+vermouth.

The downward spiral came when people started ordering 'vodka martinis'.

From there, basically any alcohol put into a martini-shaped glass has been considered a martini.

The most bizarre development is now, when I order my Martini (Sapphire, very dry, with olives) at least half the time I am asked if I want it "up" or "on the rocks". I want it up goddammit, its a Martini.
