22 NLTRN - Playing 22 OOP

First level of a HU tournament, and about even chip stacks.

The only read on villian so far is that he will not play every hand preflop...but this was my first chance to reraise him preflop. Postflop he has folded a couple hands and shown down top pair at our one showdown.

Villian raises to 90. I reraise to 270 with 2h2s. Villian calls.

Flop comes Q95 all hearts. I bet 300. Villian raises to 600. I fold.

Standard?

I hate going down to 900 chips early in the tournament because of overplaying hands OOP, but I am trying to be more aggressive with pocket pairs OOP

Not the best hand to 3-bet with at even chip stacks and low blinds.

Flop is fairly standard, I might bet a little more, like 350-400.

Ok. I'm assuming you call. Then do you play for set value only?

That's how I was playing these hands (22-66) before trying this approach.

yeah i prefer to play the low pairs for set value. The only opponents who I like to 3bet with them are the ones who raise a lot pf but give up a lot on the flop.

Call this PF. No reason to inflate the pot OOP when any flop not containing a 2 is scary for you. [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Cbet the flop 1/2 pot then fold if faced with resistance. I dont double barrel this either.

IMO a lot of times it is better than 3-betting, yes. On rare occasions I would fold it. Set value is so huge in HUSNG, that with a 40bb+ stack I don't think it makes a ton of sense to fold 22 even against the trickiest and most aggressive of the bunch (maybe even moreso a reason to play it?).

How are you possibly getting set value with stacks of this size????

Run the numbers, I'd assume it's +EV with those kind of stacks, I could be wrong. If the guy is passive you'll see more cards so you can see more streets and hit a set more often, if he's crazy aggro he's prolly paying it off almost everytime or there is a lot of value when you hit the set regardless.

The one thing I am sure of, when you can get a good feel for how somebody plays postflop, there is plenty of value calling with 22.

I'm sure in some situations it's profitable, but it's really opponent dependant. If your calling for set value alone I don't think it's profitable against any decent player. You need to be CRing some flops, throwing in some pure bluffs etc to balance your OOP play.

I agree with you that its definitely +EV if you get a line on someones post flop play.

I'm generally folding or calling this pre (50/50), I don't see the value in 3 betting it unless opponent is really aggro on the button. In which case I might 3 bet 92o as well which has basically the same value as 2,2 anyway (depends on there 3 bet calling frequencies).
