Never fully understood the admonition about teaching a pig to sing until now.

- what exactly does a player need to do in order to protect their action?

Speak up. "Hey I haven't acted yet"

Right, and that's what SB did.

If you're small blind and you turn away for a second or two (that's all it might take) do you lose your right to the pot even if you protect your action as soon as it comes to your attention?

Guess you are unfamiliar with the phrase "Closing the barn door after the horse is gone."

And if he would have did it in a timely fashion, it'd be a different story. What did SB think when the pot was being handed to OP and OP was giving him the cards? The answer appears to be nothing, and that's what he gets.

The rest of the table doesnt have the right to screw SB just because he gets distracted briefly. That seems unduly harsh to SB if you ask me. Dealer has a responsbility to bring SB's attention to his turn to act if SB is distracted, and everyone involved and paying attention has a responsbility to see that this procedure is followed, *not* to carry on regardless. In another situation it might be floor coming over to talk to SB, or maybe SB notices something (like a smoking trash can). Should SB forfeit his right of action then?

I've changed my mind.

You are 100% right.
All these professional dealers and floormen don't know what they're talking about.

And I'll ask again,

Pocket? Where did you pick up that term?

C'mon, folks, cut this guy a break. The OP left out some significant details. Namely, that the SB had no arms or tongue, had his eyeballs squicked out, and was paralyzed from the waist up, so he couldn't even flop his useless torso on the table to stop the pot from being shipped.

LiveInPeace, if you want to live in peace, you're going to have to start actually conversing with those around you and listening to people who know about what they're talking. We understand your points, we really do. And I could see an argument for letting the hand play out had the SB stopped the dealer at any point in this story before the OP released his hand. But the way it played out, SB is SOL, end of story.

You have the attitude of a lot of people I see in the cardroom for the first time. But this approach is like an elevator in an outhouse... don't belong. With experience, you'll get used to the B&M dynamics. If you ever decide to listen to people here rather than dismiss them out of hand, this will happen sooner and more smoothly.
