I'm not sure what the big deal is. Why people getting angry at people who claim to drive it over 280+ yards.

I currently have about 15 full time students, all are Japanese, and most are less than 5'7". At least 10 of them routinely drive the ball over 280 yards.

2 or 3 of them can on occasion drive the ball over 300 yds.

The long hitters on tour avg just over 300 yds, and they can literally bunt it 300 in normal conditions.

I don't think anyone is angry. It's just that many posters are saying, "what's the big deal", and then feel the need to say (1) how many people they know who can hit it 300+, or (2) how easy it is to hit it 300+.

I'm not angry, just suprised at how many people don't get that less than 1% of the golfers in the world can hit it over 300.

You haven't read this thread close enough. Any hacker can drive the ball 280 on occasion, we're talking about players (claiming) AVERAGING 280 or 300 or carrying it 300 on average or whatever.

Sure, 15-20 tour players fit this category. 15-20 of the best players in the world. And people here keep claiming they average some lofty number. Last I checked, the people here are not the best golfers in the world.

If I hit the ball well I can hit it, with roll, 280yrds. I probably hit it 260 8/10 times and 280+ 2/10.

I certainly don't carry the ball 280 yards. And there is a difference between "I usually hit it 300 yards" and "I have hit it 300 yards".

The courses that professionals play, the ball runs futher. Add that to the specialised equipment and the golf balls and their spin rates tailored to the individual, it really isn't too surprising that the worlds best are now hitting drives of 350 yards.

Jack Nicklaus in his book playing lessons said his driver went around 260 yards carry. Now most average players play courses in a condition comparable with tournament courses back then and they don't have the tailored equipment - putting it probably on about the level of what Nicklaus used. He was a big hitter on tour at the time which mean't that the others where probably in 240-250 yard range.

Now when I practice golf at the range (and have played since I was a kid) and I hit the ball on average about 270 perhaps 280 if caught really pure. Maybe not far in comparison to a long drive competitor but pretty darn far. My ballstriking (in terms of length) is at a professional standard. Even if I wail away like I am trying to play a long drive contest, im not going to get much more than 270. Yet I rarely see anyone around about me getting it even close that. I don't think from the reaction around about me that people realise how far that is and how much better I strike the ball in comparison to all around me until they see it. When I hit the ball it sizzles, the sound off their club sounds like a dull thud.

Yet on a poker forum of all places there are incredible stats. Please....

Thinly veiled (and not very good) brag post?

Frankly I'm more impressed by talk of the ball sizzling off your club than I am by that picture.

I didn't want to brag, but I guess I'll post this stop motion of me and my swing.
