BUMP

From Will Carroll's blog on BP:

[ QUOTE ]
Get your tinfoil hats out and don’t blame the messenger here, but a lot of people are starting to espouse some conspiracy theories when it comes to Alex Rodriguez and baseball. If you haven’t noticed, there’s a lot of 3B on the market suddenly. Miguel Cabrera is being shopped, Scott Rolen is making news about his no-trade clause, Mike Lowell wasn’t re-signed by the Red Sox despite many thinking it would happen in concert with the Curt Schilling signing, and Adrian Beltre is being mentioned as an available commodity. Is someone trying to inflate the supply and hold Rodriguez’s value down? If baseball can’t agree on instant replay, what makes you think they could pull off a grand conspiracy?

Why should the Yanks have to eat $21m just because ARod wanted to juice the market with multiple offers?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because A-Rod was the best player in baseball and is declining so why not spend that money much more wisely over the next 10 years to replace his production and more?

Doesn't it make sense that when Boras says that a 32 year old third baseman with below average defensive skills who hits like a good first baseman is worth $300M, that every other team with a expendable third baseman might think, "Ka-Ching!"?

Alex Rodriguez - Age 32 - Career OPS+ 147
Miquel Cabrera - Age 24 - Career OPS+ 143

OPS+ 2006, 2007
A-Rod 137, 177
Cabrera 159, 150

Range Factor (RF9) 2007
A-Rod 2.42
Cabrera 2.51

Do you blame the Marlins for thinking it's time to cash in their Cabrera chip? If you thought Cabrera can stay at third, who in their right mind would take A-Rod over Cabrera for the next five years, let alone ten?

DC,

I don't put much stock in the conspiracy theory ideas, but I also have a healthy distrust for the owners after the collusions scandals.

Well it doesn't take a conspiracy for owners to realize A-Rod will be worth less over this contract than he was in the last. And based on this article, who is left who can write a check?

[ QUOTE ]

The Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Giants and Marlins are among the teams which have not publicly ruled out pursuing Rodriguez. Sources say it is highly unlikely that the Dodgers will seriously entertain the possibility.

[/ QUOTE ]

The Angels have said they won't pay over $20M, the Met's hav a better 3B and SS already, and the Marlins are a joke. Have fun in SF, Alex!

But nobody in their right mind thinks Cabrera can stay at third.

Please respond to the person who made the comments you reference so the rest of us know wtf you're talking about.

Anyway most people around here will tell you that Wright is worth more going foward simply because he's a younger player. He may not be worth more next season, but over the course of the next ten (or however long of a contract Boras wnats) he probably will be.

Not even close at all. Not to mention the time value of money. There is a huge discount.
