Why would I want to memorize a bunch of crap I don't have to? [/ QUOTE ] Not really the kind of attitude that's going to get you out of Iowa. |

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
Well, I distinctly remember a prof saying that, and it clicking with me from that point forward. I guess it's possible, like traz says, that I was daydreaming or something and just got it 100% backwards. Whatever the reason, I really thought it was the other way around from college on.
In any case, I now feel like a huge moron for always spelling "It's" as "Its." |

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
It's just a basic contraction rule, similar to I'm. It kinda implies a not-very-thorough understanding of the rule to begin with :P . Do you only do it with "it is"? heh

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
I'm kind of weird in that terrible spelling really bugs me but I also think I'm a pretty lousy speller.
I know how to spell 'lose' vs. 'loose' though. When I'm typing pretty fast, especially before I have my coffee, I will sometimes mix up really basic stuff like 'know' vs. 'no'. Sometimes I catch it. But my posts end up with a lot of typos and weird spellings mostly just due to my lazyness. When I see a 'know' that I typed as 'no' I wonder how the hell that happened. But there's probably some aspect of language and thought-flow and my brain (ha ha, just types 'brian' and had to correct it) that I don't quite understand. Some of the 'know' vs 'no' stuff that I do somehow remind me of my late grandfather in his final years. He had had multiple strokes and messed up a lot of words. My Grandma would call him to dinner and he would try to say, "Be there in a minute" but he couldn't remember the word "minute" and would end up saying all sorts of different time-related words trying to find the right one. "Be there in a....uhhhh....day ....uh..........hour uh.....November" and then he would get frustrated and give up. |

Re: Rant: People who can\'t spell
RDH,
Just remember that a "'" usually is there to take the place of a letter. That should clarify things. It is = it's 1989 = '89 do not = don't Guns and Roses = Guns 'n' Roses. <---actually not sure 'bout this one. |

except when used for possession, which is usually the reason people screw that one up.
