AQ on the button
A sunday $215.
Blinds 50-100. MP makes it 300 with about 3k behind. He has seemed tightish from a very small sample. So not much read. I call (with 6.5k behind) on the button with AQ. BB comes along (with 5k). I have bet when checked to when last to act on the flop many times in a row. Flop J32. Check-check and I check. Turn A. BB bets 400. MP calls and I fold. Thoughts? |

Re: AQ on the button
Hey, sorry for the shameless bump, but this got buried a zillion posts deep in the Sunday deluge real fast, and I think the hand's interesting.

Re: AQ on the button
Preflop: Given the read, I like the call.
Flop: I guess you checked since your check-raise radar was on. No problem there. Turn: Why fold? I know you said MP is tight, but is your read strong enough to *know* that he's beating AQ just because he calls a 40% pot bet? Later, Che |

Re: AQ on the button
Preflop, the call is probably correct, although I would be tempted to push.
I would probably bet the flop and try to take the pot. On the turn you did what? Definately a call or raise. What is the point of the preflop call or playing in the tournament if you are going to fold here. |

Now, it's possible that these guys turn up with something like JT and 77 here, but that's quite a parlay, and there's still the problem of getting to showdown. I don't know if MP is opening tight, but if he is, I beat basically nothing here. I can't beat any ace (AT? maybe...), which is his most likely candidate for checking the flop. Now, he wasn't necessarily opening tight, but I still have the blind to worry about. By the way, I do not in general have a problem with getting my chips to the center of the table. --Nate |

Re: AQ on the button
Meh,
I probably call. But I don't think folding is terrible... I think you'll be ahead most of the time here. The problem is that when you're ahead the river action will most likely go check, check, check (unless you make a pretty hopeless v-bet or someone else gets ansy) But when you're behind the action will have some kinda bet in there. So getting to showdown will be much harder when you're behind. But, because the 1st street was checked...I think the turn bet/call isn't too scary. It could easily be a "stab" + "lets see if he fires again" call. Also, I call because I'm getting great odds here. |

Results / river plan?
BB jammed the river. MP folded.
Those calling -- how would you play the river? --Nate |

Re: AQ on the button
While NLHETAP specifically warns about getting too excited about making top pair on the turn - I'd still call. If there's too much action on the river - fold, but I think you're getting a free or cheap showdown here quite often enough to make the call the right play.
