Default Obama\'s \"Bob Jones\" moment?

I think we remember how Bush made a speech at Bob Jones in South Carolina during his presidential run and got heavily criticised for it. And rightly so.

So have candidates learned their lesson from this?

I don't think Obama has learned this.

He is going on a tour with a major anti-gay preacher.
Mr. McClurkin, preacher and gospel singer

With some previous controversy about his own Chicago church, you would think he wouldn't be so quick to get in bed with controversial religious types, especially those who are against a major component of the Democratic party, gay Americans.

What do you think?

Who says gay americans are a major component of the democratic party?

Bob Jones U is really creepy with how they won't let the boys and girls touch each other AT ALL, imo.

I went to school in Greenville, SC, and all the student-teachers were from BJ Univ. They were all crazy and disturbing. Weird combination of surface niceness with absurd disciplinarianism.

That would explain why Obama feels he can pick up more votes from those who hate gays than the votes he loses from gays. Perhaps he is practicing tactical politics here, just like Bush was doing with Bob Jones.

Overview of scandal

The media was all over that scandal, I wonder how much coverage this anti-gay thing will get.

1) If there is one thing I've learned, abusing your base after the primaries and while elected is smart politics. It's not like they will go and vote for the other guy anyway.

2) Obama is black. He can be a racist, sexist, homophobe and it doesn't really matter. It's a free pass.

Nope. 33 and I've been plenty interested in politics the entire time. I just don't care about anything most Republicrats have to say. As such, if I see an article titled "Bush blah blah blah" or "Clinton blah blah blah" I'm probably not going to read it.

You're positing that Obama gets a "free pass" because he's black...in a thread *chronicling the controversy* surrounding Obama's decision to campaign with a potentially homophobic preacher?

I mean, you would logically expect that in a world where Obama actually got a "free pass" because he's black, this thread and various media reports covering this controversial moment would not exist for you to comment on. And yet here you are, seemingly defying reason, commenting that Obama is actually getting a "free pass" in a thread devoted to criticizing Obama for not learning the "Bob Jones lesson", complete with links to gay advocacy groups and the NYT blog taking shots at Obama for said controversial campaign tactics.

No comprende, senor. No comprende.
