Re: Beat: Dog dying of cancer -- parents want to put her down
OP-
I had my dog for 17 years. It was the family dog, but i had the most time and energy invested. When it was obvious she no longer was getting anything out of life I insisted on putting her down and being there and holding her as it happened. Its obviously a hard thing to do- but I believe the dog should have the comfort of familiar surroundings. We had the vet come into our house obviously. Treat the pet with dignity at the end like you would want to be treated. And it is a fine line between spending money on a terminally ill pet to keep them comfortable and deciding the time is right to put them down. Best of luck. I didn't get a new pet for some time. I think everyone will have their own time frame for that. But I can't disagree with the suggestion of making it happen sooner rather than later if you plan on getting a new pet. It will help with the void. |

Re: Beat: Dog dying of cancer -- parents want to put her down
I had a dog for that long who died, and I still cant decide if being there when they put her down was the right decision. It was pretty emotional.

I'm definitely going to be with her when they do it, even though I'm going to be crying harder than I ever have in my life. I feel like it's only fair to her.

Re: Beat: Dog dying of cancer -- parents want to put her down
I just saw this thread and wanted to say I'm sorry for your loss. Here are a couple of good articles that can help you with your decision and dealing with your loss. Here is another website that I have not personally looked at but I have been told it is good for helping people deal with their loss. I know that this is difficult but you have to have your pet's best interests in mind. Sorry for your loss.

Re: Beat: Dog dying of cancer -- parents want to put her down
I can't imagine my dog having to go down, he's only 4 and the other one 1 1/2 but damn it would hurt. I agree with the decision of putting him down if he no longers like to eat what he loves or enjoys walking.
Sucks for you GL on that |

Re: Beat: Dog dying of cancer -- parents want to put her down
My baby will be 12 this summer.. I hate to think what i'll do without him.. I feel your pain.
When making a decision to do that you have to consider the quality of life he will have. By all means get a 2nd opinion before doing anything if you don't trust the vet.. my dog wouldn't be going to one I dind't trust |

Re: Beat: Dog dying of cancer -- parents want to put her down
KSOT -
I'm really sorry about your dog. I can empathize with you wanting to take heroic measures to save her. She is as much a part of your family as a sister would be. Non-dog-owners can never understand. I don't know what's right for you right now. I'm not a vet and I don't know your dog. Keep in mind with all the advice you get on this forum that none of us can know what's right for you. One thing though. It sounds like she's in a lot of pain when she's not medicated, and that doesn't sound like its going to stop. If the cancer can't be cured - I know this is hard - but you might need to think about what's best for her right now. Sometimes the best gift you can give her is relief. I'm really sorry you have to go through this. |
