Default DVD Decoder

I just bought a new laptop from Dell with a DVD player. When i went and stuck a DVD(tried 2) in it a pop up box asked if i wanted to find a program or use WMP. I clicked WMP and it says no DVD decoder was found. Anyone know anything to help?

Default Re: DVD Decoder

short answer: get VLC - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

longer answer: video is stored in a variety of formats. your computer needs to know how to decode the data. to do this, it uses little bits of software called "codecs"

there is a reasonable chance that you may have the codec already installed on your machine to read DVDs, but if WMP can't access it, there may be some proprietary software installed by Dell that can play DVDs instead.

VLC is an open source media player that includes a number of free codecs that opens the vast majority of video formats. to put it simply, "it just works"
