Dell Latitude - Monitors?

I just bought a new Dell Latitude D600 Laptop. Can i use a bigger monitor or use another monitor and the computer screen at the same time?

Do i need to do anything special or can i just plug a bigger monitor into the back?

I just went and took a monitor(one of the old bulky ones) and plugged the cord into the back of the laptop. The laptop runs normal but the bulky one stays black.
