I can definitely understand that, if he did have a big hand that comment would have made sense. He had actually folded before it got to me preflop. I won the hand when someone hit a jack and stayed till the river. The original guy who said I was steaming though, said, well, its still a bad idea to raise. He told me I was wrong to "push people out" with a big hand.

They're in a strange environment and so compensate by trying to establish that they're not idiots. See? They know something about cards! Also, people in general tend to have a hard time keeping quiet when they feel attacked. Mix the insecurity with an innocuous comment about a person's play, and suddenly the table captain feels a strong need to prove him/herself.

I was in a tournament yesterday and was a bit short-stacked and made a wrong move with 7s. Shorter stack friend called behind me. He had aces, I didn't improve. Afterwards he told me he was very nervous when I pushed before him, that I might have a pair. Um... huh? I suppose it's easier to crack aces with a PP than two random cards, but in describing why he was nervous, he related a story when he had JJ and was afraid someone else pushing had kings. And this guy's a dealer, too.

There was this one guy in a 10-person homegame tourney I played at briefly, whenever he'd have a tough decision for all his chips, he'd tank and inevitably make the call. His reasoning would be "I either win or lose, so it's 50/50, and I'm getting more than even money, so I have to call." This happened several times. His reasoning was that since they both have one card to hit (the Ten or the Queen) it 'must be about 50/50'. Also have heard another legend about the computer hand many times, supposedly it is named thus because computers proved it 'hits the flop more often than any other hand'. Obvious when you think about it.

He went on about never winning coinflips and yadda yadda. I finally said "well, not really a coinflip" and he said "how's that?" and I said "you were dominated" and he started screaming "YOU HAD ONE CARD HIGHER THAN ME HOW IS THAT DOMINATED? [censored]!" I just smiled and nodded and said "yeah, you're right, man. hope you win the next race."

European middle aged guy sits at our 15/30 at the Bellagio. He posts, checks, flop comes paired board, bb bets around to him, and he flips over his full house and mucks his hand. Everyone is just staring, incredulous, and he says, "I always post and always muck my first hand. It's good luck in my country." Maybe not the worst strategy, but has to be one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen at a table.

I had a guy at a live table on Sunday who every time he had a flush draw after the flop, would call any bet, then flip his cards over and state "it's a coin flip".
I thought he was joking the first couple of times, but after the 5 or 6th time and calling huge post flop raises, it finally sunk in that he was completely serious.
