Smell is a good indicator of taste, but orange hairs have little to do with how high you will get. Look for THC crystals. If you want to get really crazy get one of these http://www.radioshack.com/sm-more-produc...pi-2179604.html and look at your bud through it. The larger the trichomes the better.

If you want to rehydrate your weed because it is "too dry" you can put it in a bag with freshly cut apples overnight. Don't leave it too long or it will mold.

Weed can be cured as well. Cannabinoids continue to turn to THC after the plant is harvested this means that if you keep your freshly grown and harvested weed in a cool dark moisture free environment it will get better over time. You should be storing it correctly though. Which means an airtight jar or container which you open for 20-30 mins a day and keep in a cool dark place I.E. a box in the fridge or a cabinent.

i really like moist, orange crystally (the two usually go hand in hand), candy-like smelling bud that sticks to your fingers when you break it up. this basically is KB (kind bud) and up.

Resin gland size isn't necessarily an indication of quality. Sativas tend to have smaller glands while indicas have larger ones. For the most part when you're using a loupe/micro you'll be looking at the color of the glands to determine if they're clear, milky/translucent or amber.

Op, you can use $50 as a decent rule of thumb for good buds.
If you hear a number like $20 you can be pretty sure it's schwaggy. Of course this number can vary some depending on where you live etc. Also try not to overpay for mids/BC being passed off as headies. Just ask your friends, as long as they aren't clueless or dbags they'll steer you in the right direction.

I pay $20-$30 for fat 1/8th's of lemon kush, purple kush, northern lights/blueberry and other really really good strains. $30 gets me weed that puts ME on my ass and I smoke everyday. I love where I live.
